Reaching the age of 100 is quite the accomplishment in and of itself, something that Burke has earned through sacrifice, the call of duty, sweat, and tears.

Major Edward Burke began active duty in 1942 after graduating from Xavier University. During his time at the university, he joined the ROTC artillery group. The following day after graduation, Burke started active military duty.

During WWII, Major Edward Burke served as a Captain in the United States Army. Throughout the war, he commanded a tank battalion and on D-Day on the beaches of Normandy. At the Battle of the Bulge, he answered the call once again by sneaking undetected through enemy lines to ensure his tank destroyers could pass over the soggy wet ground once they crossed a pontoon bridge. He then led the 821st Tank Destroyer Battalion "A Company" across the bridge and attacked the German army at the town of Julich. Major Burke was later awarded the Silver Star Medal.

Burke was also awarded the Bronze Star for his service at St. Lo, Villebaudon, Vire and Brest. For his service at the battle at Vire, he was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, and the Medal of Honor.

Burke is a member of the Cheviot-Westwood Kiwanis Club. You may have seen him in the lead car smiling and waving to spectators as the Grand Marshall during the 2014 Harvest Home Parade.

Edward Burke is certainly a man we all should aspire to be like. On behalf of the Cheviot Gazette, Happy Birthday, Ed. Thank you for your service to our great country, God bless.
